Each season, we offer several schools, preschools, and childcare centers a partial scholarship for a musical enrichment program for students.
These are very limited and dependent on the financial donations received the proir season.

In loving memory of Van Lawton, we started collecting used instruments and gifting them to kids who wanted to play. Keeping Van's "music and magic" alive, we continue to share the gift of music. Changing lives one note at a time we say: "music in our hands,
magic in our hearts"

With the help of "magic makers" like you, we collect gently used instruments, fix them up and gift them to families all across Maine and New England. We work with partnering organizations, music educators, social workers, and community members, and small businesses to continue this work.
New in 2025 we are also offering scholarships for schools and childcare centers to bring musical enrichment programming to students.

Music and Magic’s annual great instrument giveaways are sponsored by the Tom Rowe Music Makers Scholarship Fund. Tom was a founding member of pivotal Maine folk group Schooner Fare, as well as Turkey Hollow in which he performed with his son, Dave. His life-long love of performing music began with a clarinet recital on a Maine grange-hall stage as a child. Tom was so energized by the audience reaction to his fledgling performance that he not only dedicated his life to being a musician, he always did what he could to share that love with younger generations as a teacher and mentor to countless up-and-coming musicians. It's only fitting to continue that enduring legacy in his name through the good works of Music and Magic.

We rely soley on generous donations from individuals and organizations. If you would like to become a magic maker by making a donation of an instrument or a financial contribution, please email us at musicandmagicmaine@gmail.com
Some of our biggest Magic Makers include:

Yes. Any child or young adult in Maine may receive an instrument from us at no cost. Schools are welcome to collect instruments for music programs too.
**starting November 2025 we are focusing on gifting Guitars, Ukuleles, Keyboards, and Drumsets. We accept instrument donations in "playable" condition. WE DO NO TAKE PIANOS.
Families may take one instrument per child/ per year. If a child changes their mind, they are welcome to exchange at anytime, if we have something else they would prefer.
We host events: when an instrument drive is completed, a "Great Instrument Giveaway" event will take place. Dates, time, and locations are posted online and to social media months in advance to give folks time to mark calendars. Our give away events are first come first serve. We ask for email addresses and first name/age of child recipient. Photos are optional.
Due to the extremely high volume of requests, we are unable in most cases to hold instruments. You can always email us with a specific request and we will do our best.
Unfortunately, Pianos are the one instrument we cannot accept. You are always welcome to post your piano to be gifted for FREE on our social media pages for sharing but we cannot take them.

Research confirms what we all know, children who play music are inevitably more confident and creative and have a substantially positive effect on the community in which they live because of this. From the educational standpoint, English, Mathematics, Science and Foreign language skills are all positively impacted by a child’s participation in a school’s chorus, orchestra or band. While many schools are cutting or downsizing their existing music classes, research and experience bear out that music appreciation and music performance in school are central to developing the whole child. Music and Magic is approached by many families who cannot afford the rentals of these programs and those who can, find that the children are at a loss when the program ends and the instrument is no longer available to them. We feel it is imperative that for the child to deeply connect to the experience they need to have their own instrument. Studies confirm that participation in music makes an even greater impact upon the life skills and academic performance of financially challenged and other at-risk students. Music invites creativity, self-expression, healthy release of emotions and self-esteem.
Established in 2009 upon the sudden death of beloved musician Van Lawton of South Paris Maine, Music and Magic was created to honor his memory. Born Ivandal Lawton in Roxbury, MA in 1974, Van grew up with a fondness for music. He joined the school band in sixth grade playing trombone and wasn’t fortunate enough to handle a guitar until the age of 15. At the age of 16 he began his love affair with the Bass. Writing and performing in all genres of music, Van was motivated by the idea of inspiring children to make music. He became a well known and sought out musician, songwriter, and recording artist in Maine in the early 2000's. Family and friends agreed that the best way to honor his memory and keep his music and magic alive was to create a way to give instruments to children who had a desire to play. Amanda Duquette who was "like a sister" to him, began collecting gently used instruments and giving them to kids in 2009, and has made it her passion to tell his story to all the children who receive instruments in his memory since.
